Prepare – Lamentations 3:22-24

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”

Devotional

God’s past mercies are reminders of the great hope we have for our future. Look closely at the language of verse 22. The all caps of LORD are an indicator of God’s name revealed to Moses, “Yahweh.” We remember from Exodus 3:13-15 that this is God’s chosen revelation of His character as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

Also note that the words, “great love,” are the Hebrew word, “hessed.” Hessed is often translated as faithful love, loyal love, mercy, or lovingkindness. All of these are attempts to make sense of God’s profound generous commitment to His people.

God’s mercies are new every morning. He is faithful!

Like the author of Lamentations, remind yourself today that: “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

Consider making a list for yourself of ways in which God has been faithful to you in the past. Thank Him for that list.

Allow God to remind you of His faithfulness and turn to Him with hope.
