Christmas Can Still Change the World!
This year, through Advent in Action, we are encouraging our congregation to celebrate Christmas by spending less and giving more. America spends an average of $130 billion a year at Christmas! So what are we asking? That each of us consider buying one less gift this year. Just one. By spending less, we have the opportunity to redirect those dollars to a ministry who will use them to build the Kingdom.
“Plant a seed. Grow a nation.”
Friends of IFOSuD from North Dakota have invited us to partner with them this year to help provide relief from the massive devastation wrought by Hurricane Matthew. IFOSuD is a Christian international non-profit organization based in Léogane, Haiti promoting social, entrepreneurial and sustainable development. Their mission is to alleviate the poverty of Haitian farmers and rural micro-entrepreneurs in a sustainable way in regards to the improvement of their livelihoods and food security conditions. 2016 Advent in Action dollars will be used to purchase seeds for farmers, food needs, and evangelism. 100% of the funds raised through Advent in Action will go to IFOSuD.
Over the last several years Advent in Action investments in water wells, sanitation improvements, and transportation have all proved to be tangible expressions of Christ’s love. We regularly receive updates from Master’s Heart, Awana, and others that our investments are providing opportunities to share the love of Jesus. These projects regularly remind people that God really does love their community.
2016 Advent in Action Strategy
IFOSuD regularly provides agricultural training, financial counseling, and Christian discipleship. The leaders of IFOSuD are volunteers who have a heart for rebuilding their country through sustainable farming and business practices built on the person of Jesus.
Agricultural Training – Led by educated Haitians, our team trains Haitian farmers to plant, irrigate, fertilize, identify and control pests, and harvest their fields with hands-on training. We have already seen yields increase 60%!
Financial Counseling – Our team also walks the farmer through his expenses and income. They help the farmer realize the potential to market his crop and increase his income.
Christian Discipleship – Our team’s main focus it to evangelize and disciple the farmers we work with through devotions, church meetings, and one-on-one conversations. The Haitians are a very spiritual people, and without the discipleship, true farming and social change will not happen.
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me… “
(Matthew 25:34-35 ESV)
Will what I give make a difference?
If we all give a little, it adds up to a LOT. Your gift of $40, $100, or $1,000 will go a long way toward providing seeds for farmers, emergency food and evangelist work through the local church. Each $40 donation will provide emergency food relief for one family. $40 buys enough food to feed 6-10 kids and their parents with 90% black bean and 10% corn.
These investments help build gospel-centered relationships. If every adult at Bethel gave $50 we would quickly raise over $60,000! Let’s join together this season in sending a special gift to IFOSuD. Merry Christmas!
