Harvey Seidel

Harvey-SeidelSeveral years ago following the death of my wife I was having a pity party. I asked the Lord, “Why, why, why me?” I then sensed the Holy Spirit speaking to me, saying “That chapter of your life is past, put a period after it and turn the page.” In my mind’s eye I turned the page. The page was empty. The voice of the Lord again seemed to say, “Now let me start writing on it.” I then moved to Fargo and attended many prayer meetings and Bible studies but did not seem to be hearing from the Lord about a direction for my life.

Missions has always been an important part of my life. I contacted a mission organization on my own, I went through the application process and with great anticipation I began filling out the application. Yet once again I sensed that voice but He was saying NO.  With tears streaming down my face, I placed the application in the waste basket. I sat there disappointed and confused. Again, I asked the question, “now what Lord?”

Two weeks later the man who started the jail ministry at the Cass County Jail contacted me. Pastor Curt Frankhauser took me to lunch. During the meal he asked if I would be interested in Jail ministry. My immediate response was an emphatic no. I told him I had been asked that many years ago and I just could not do that. He said ok, but than asked “Harvey will you pray and ask God if this is your ministry?”  I answered “yes I will.”

It has been over seven years since I prayed that prayer. Having witnessed change in the lives of many men in the Cass County Jail I am encouraged to press on. The ministry is not without struggles. The evil one is always at work to discourage and obstruct the work of the Lord God Almighty. My Bible studies are on Thursday evenings and my wife and I joke about my “Thursday flu”. The evil one tries to hinder me. I have arrived at the jail wondering, “how can I do this tonight?”, but when I am finished with the study, I am feeling terrific!

Acts 1:8  “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” We need to discover where he is calling us. He has called me to the Cass County Jail.
