This is Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. At this point the Israelites are still wandering in the desert because they had disobeyed God and refused to enter the Promised Land because they were afraid of the powerful nations living in Canaan. Moses is now addressing the children of the parents who had rebelled against God 40 years earlier. In Deuteronomy 6, Moses lays out a clear and concise message to the nation of Israel of the proper priorities they should embrace: (1) God is always the highest priority (Vv. 4-5); (2) the role of the parents who love, follow & obey God are to invest those biblical principles, morals and ethics into their children (Vv.6-8); (3) the entire faith community is to participate in the discipleship of God’s people (Vv. 10-15).
