Paul’s letter to the believers in Colossae serves as a model for how we can love our brothers and sisters in Christ. While in prison in Rome, Epaphras visited Paul and shared about the faith and love the believers in Colossae had for one another. Their faith in Jesus was producing spiritual fruit. Paul wanted to encourage these believers to remain faithful by reminding them of who Jesus is, what He has done, and how they are to respond. Paul never met the believers to whom he wrote this letter but he spent much energy investing in their faith through prayer and writing to them. He also sent some of his best teammates to encourage their faithful walk with Jesus. Paul models how we can pray for one another. His emphasis on their identity in Christ reminds us that as Jesus followers, we must continually fan into flame the faith we share in Jesus. In Christ, we have been rescued from the domain of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of God’s Son. This powerful reality sets us free to serve Jesus with joy. Having left the old ways of thinking, we can now put on the new ways of living. Here we see how we can move toward Jesus and take others with us.
