Dying to Live

The early church in Galatia heard the good news that relationship with God was made possible by grace through faith in Jesus. Their hearts were made new as they received the gospel. Fairly quickly, other teachers followed Paul and taught that grace was good but to be a true Christian one had to keep the Law (1:6-9). This "other gospel" was really no good news at all. Paul was a living example of how one could not rely on keeping the Law and be made right with God. The Law is good and holy and just and reveals the darkness of our sin problem leading us to Christ. Paul is quick to remind this young church that they are set free (3-5) to live by grace through faith in the power of the Holy Spirit. In Christ we are set free as we die to ourselves so that we might live for Him. Dying to the authority of sin gives way to freedom to live in the fullness of Jesus.
